BIOS Stands for Basic Input Output System एवं इसको System BIOS, ROM BIOS or PC BIOS नाम से भी जाना जाता है | यह एक ROM chip होती है जो की सभी machines के motherboard मे built in होती है | जब आप अपने कंप्यूटर को स्टार्ट करते है तो booting process (power-on startup) के समय BIOS hardware initialization का काम करती है | इसके साथ साथ यह OS एंड सभी programs को run time service प्रोवाइड करती है |
Motherboard की ROM chip मे firmware code किया होता है जो की किसी भी कंप्यूटर मे run होने वाला फर्स्ट प्रोग्राम होता है एवं बाद मे कंट्रोल OS को pass कर देता है | इस प्रकार BIOS का purpose booting time मे PCs के system hardware को initialize एवं test करके boot loader or OS load करना होता है |
ज्यादातर सभी BIOS को डिज़ाइन and कोड, PC and motherboard model के according किया जाता है| पहले BIOS firmware ROM Chip (मदरबोर्ड) मे स्टोर किया जाता था लकिन अब modern computers मे बायोस contents या firmware को flash memory मे store किया जाने लगा है जिससे की contents को edit या वापस से change करने के लिए मदरबोर्ड से नहीं निकलना पड़े | फ़्लैश मेमोरी मे स्टोर करने से फर्मवेयर को easily update or change किया जा सकता है एवं अगर कोई नए features add करने हो या कोई bug fix करना हो तो वो भी easily possible है |
बायोस फर्मवेयर मे keyboards, disk drives, display screens, boot priority, serial communication एवं बहुत सारे हार्डवेयर एंड PC functions को कंट्रोल किया जा सकता है |
