RAID is short for redundant array of independent disks. RAID एक data storage virtualization technology है जिसमे data redundancy एवं performance improvement के लिए multiple physical disk drives को combine करके एक single logical unit बनायीं जाती है| RAID मे दो या ज्यादा hard disks को combine करके एक array बनाते है और फिर RAID की अलग अलग technique or levels use करके configure किया जाता है |
RAID की different technologies or level को use करते हुए Data को अलग-अलग drives मे डिस्ट्रीब्यूट किया जाता है | Data distribution ले आउट्स को अलग-अलग फीचर्स, reliability, availability, performance, and capacity के according different level मे distribute किया हुआ है जिसको की RAID Levels कहते है for example RAID 0, RAID 1 etc | ओरिजनली केवल पांच RAID levels को define किया गया था लकिन time एवं जरुरत के अनुसार many other variations evolve हुए है यहाँ पर हम RAID के standard level को discuss कर रहे है –

डेटा Mirroring – जब इस techniq को use करते है तो same डेटा को अलग अलग drives (one or more disks in the same array) मे save किया जाता है इसको mirroring कहते है | जब एक हार्ड drive fail हो जाती है तो data को दूसरी hard drive से recover किया जा सकता है |
